The North Vietnamese regarded the DMZ buffer zone as a haven for the storage of ammunition and supplies for their campaigns in the northern provinces of South Vietnam and as such the zone was watched very carefully by the US forces. A Bird Dog (call sign Covey 6) operating from a forward airstrip at Dong Ha was flying over the DMZ when it was hit by ground fire. Capt Mays bailed out of his aircraft and landed within the buffer zone but he was rescued by a USAF HH-3E helicopter. |
