Forward air controllers frequently operated from small airstrips to be closer to the ground forces they were supporting. This close working relationship was vital to ensure that the FAC knew the ground situation in the area he was flying over and exactly where the friendly troops were. 1Lt Vandeventer was operating from Black Horse airstrip about eight miles south of Xuan Loc and was flying with an Army observer. As the aircraft climbed away from the airstrip it was hit by small arms fire and crashed.
