| Lt Cassell was the section leader of two Skyraiders on an armed reconnaissance mission searching for boats and barges along the coast of North Vietnam near Thanh Hoa. A number of small boats were found and Lt Cassell commenced an attack. During the bombing run his aircraft (call sign Locket 504) was hit by automatic weapons fire from the boats and Lt Cassell radioed that he had been hit. Soon afterwards the Skyraider crashed into the sea and exploded with Lt Cassell still in the cockpit. |
