Maj Harney Carrol Copeland (POW) |
The defences around Kep were among some of the strongest in the whole of North Vietnam and were singled out for an attack on the 17th. Maj Copeland’s target was an 85mm gun position in the Kep railway yard. It is uncertain if it was this gun that hit his aircraft (call sign Red Dog), but the F-105 was indeed hit by an 85mm shell at 12,000 feet. The aircraft burst into flames and quickly became uncontrollable so Maj Copeland ejected near his target. He spent the rest of the war as a POW and was released from captivity on 14 March 1973. |
