A flight of Phantoms from Ubon was tasked for a night strike against a ferry complex at Mi Le, 10 miles south of Dong Hoi. As 1Lt Midnight’s aircraft (call sign Sapphire 2) rolled in to the attack from 10,500 feet it was hit by ground fire. The WSO ejected safely and was eventually rescued by a USAF HH-3E helicopter from Udorn but the pilot was killed. This was the first aircraft lost by the 435th TFS since it converted from the F-104C to the F-4D. The conversion not only entailed a change of aircraft but a move of base from Udorn to Ubon and the addition of navigators to the previously single-seat squadron. |
