| The O-2A was gradually replacing many of the O-1s for FAC missions in the higher threat areas such as the region around the DMZ. Maj Egger (call sign Covey 63) was controlling an air strike on an anti-aircraft gun position near Vinh Linh, five miles north of the DMZ, when he was shot down and killed. The aircraft was seen to pull up over the gun site but then was hit in the tail by ground fire and burst into flames. The aircraft crashed before the pilot could escape. Remains recovered during an investigation in 1994 were identified as being those of Maj Egger. |
