| During a Steel Tiger mission a section of Skyhawks attacked a small bridge 10 miles north of Ban Dong Pang in southern Laos. As Lt Cdr Weichman was pulling up from his third pass over the target he felt a thump as the aircraft (call sign Magic Stone 404) was hit by small arms fire and the engine temperature rose as it started to vibrate. By reducing power he was able to fly the aircraft back across Laos and South Vietnam and out over the sea. However, when still about 25 miles from the Oriskany the engine caught fire and the flight control cables were burnt through causing a complete loss of control. Lt Cdr Weichman ejected and was picked up by a Navy helicopter. |
