During a Rolling Thunder strike against army barracks at Ban Xom, an F-105D (call sign Spruce 4) was shot down about 30 miles northeast of Sam Neua, just inside North Vietnam itself. Maj Guarino ejected and landed in a village where he was captured. He was released in Operation Homecoming on 12 February 1973
Maj Guarino was commissioned in 1943 and had seen service in North Africa and Italy during the Second World War and had also flown with the American Volunteer Group (the Flying Tigers) in China. He was recalled for the Korean War and was the oldest pilot to be captured during the war in Southeast Asia. His son, Allan Guarino, also flew with the USAF during the war in Southeast Asia. |
