| The aircraft was shot down during an Operation Muscatine recce near Van Hoa, about 6 miles northwest of Quang Ngai. Operation Muscatine was a six-month long US Army security operation to protect the Marine Corps base at Chu Lai and the surrounding area. The wreck of the O-2A (call sign Helix 3) was destroyed after the bodies of the crew had been recovered by troops inserted by Army UH-1s. 1st Lieutenant Jones was an Army officer from the 52nd Military Intelligence Detachment flying as an observer attached to the 20th TASS. |
