Maj Gerald T Dwyer (Survived) |
Having survived being shot down in an O-2 on 1 April, Maj Dwyer had another lucky escape on the 21st. He was controlling an air strike on Route 968 of the Ho Chi Minh Trail near Kay Bong, 25 miles southeast of Ban Talan, when he was shot down again. The aircraft (call sign Nail 5) was hit in the starboard wing by a 37mm shell and Maj Dwyer had to bail out. During the descent he heard shots being fired at him by enemy troops on the ground. Upon landing he was pursued by five North Vietnamese soldiers. The North Vietnamese closed in as a HH-3E from the 37th ARRS approached but Maj Dwyer shot three of them with his .38 calibre revolver and was successfully rescued once more. |
