A Phantom was hit by small arms fire as it was making its sixth pass over an enemy target near An Hoa, 17 miles southwest of Da Nang. The aircraft was dropping napalm from 400 feet and was hit in the starboard wing. Maj Carroll flew the burning aircraft back towards Chu Lai and attempted to land but could not get the landing gear to extend. The crew ejected about a mile off the coast and were both rescued by an Army helicopter that was in the vicinity. |
