| An O-2 detachment at Chu Lai provided aircraft to control strikes on the surrounding area, which was becoming more and more hostile. Capt Richards (call sign Helix 27) was controlling a strike on a series of enemy bunkers and trenches about six miles southwest of the base when his aircraft was shot down from 2,000 feet by machine gun fire. The pilot may have been hit, as he did not abandon the aircraft. |
