During a mission over North Vietnam a flight of F-105s came upon a line of small boats sailing up the Song Ron River, 15 miles south of Mu Ron Ma. Maj Maxwell started a strafing run on the boats but his aircraft (call sign Wolf) was hit by ground fire and crashed. The Vietnamese returned Maj Maxwell’s remains (along with those of Capt A C Rockett and 1Lt D L Carrier who had been killed on 2 June 1967) to the USA in 1989. Maj Maxwell is commemorated in the Lincoln Memorial Park, Nebraska. |
