An O-1 pilot was controlling a landing zone preparation air strike a couple of miles to the west of the city of Hué when he was shot down. The aircraft’s engine was damaged when it was hit by .50 calibre machine gun fire, so Capt Compton made a radio call for assistance, flew a few miles to the north and crash-landed his aircraft (call sign Bilk 2) to await rescue. A US Army helicopter responded to his radio call and picked him up. |
