The 9th SOS had been activated in January 1967 from a nucleus provided by the 5th SOS to perform psychological warfare operations in the two northernmost Corps regions of South Vietnam while the 5th SOS retained responsibility for the two southernmost Corps. In addition to its original C-47s and U-10s, the 9th SOS had received a number of Cessna O-2Bs. The mission included dropping millions of Chieu Hoi leaflets, which urged the Viet Cong to defect to the South Vietnamese government. The 9th SOS’s aircraft could also be fitted with loudspeakers for broadcasting propaganda messages to the VC and their supporters. The first aircraft lost by the 9th was an O-2 (call sign Rage 3) that was shot down by small arms fire 15 miles northwest of Nha Trang during a leaflet dropping mission. This was one of only two O-2Bs to be lost during the entire war. |
