An escort for another photographic reconnaissance mission was shot down on the 25th. An F-4 (call sign Grommet) from Udorn was shot down by AAA near the Ban Karai Pass. Both the crew ejected safely but they landed close to an NVA encampment in the jungle. Voice contact was made with Maj Morrison and 1Lt Francisco and it is known that Morrison evaded successfully throughout the night. The rescue forces spoke to Maj Morrison in the morning but were unable to attempt a pick up due to bad weather. By the time the weather had improved contact had been lost with both men and they were never heard from again. It would appear that they were captured and killed by enemy forces. The crew’s identity papers and other personal effects were later displayed in the museum of the 280th Air Defence Regiment and an official North Vietnamese photograph clearly shows the dead body of Maj Morrison. |
