The first Misty FAC to be shot down in 1969 was lost during a mission near Ban Tok in southern Laos. Capt Cassaro (call sign Misty 31) was pulling up through 2,000 feet from his second pass over a target when the Super Sabre was hit by ground fire. Capt Cassaro crossed back into South Vietnam but he and 1Lt Bryan were forced to eject about 30 miles west of Da Nang. Capt Cassaro was rescued by a HH-3E from the 37th ARRS while 1Lt Bryan was rescued by a US Army OH-6 helicopter. 1Lt Bryan had been shot down before while on a close air support mission near Hué on 23 October 1968. |
