The first F-4E variant of the Phantom to be lost in Southeast Asia crashed about 14 miles north east of Korat soon after taking off on a night mission. The aircraft was attempting to join other aircraft in the flight in bad weather and was seen to enter an unusual attitude and fly into the ground. Unfortunately, neither of the crew escaped from the aircraft. 1Lt Wilson was the son of Col J G Wilson who had commanded the 8th TFW when it arrived at Ubon in 1965 and retired in 1977 as a Lieutenant General.
