Another Nail FAC was lost in Laos. The observer in this aircraft was a Staff Sergeant from the MACVSOG, the organisation that specialised in clandestine operations behind enemy lines in Southeast Asia. The aircraft (call sign Nail 4) was shot down near Ban Nathon, about 10 miles west of the DMZ. The wreckage was later inspected by a ground team but they were unable to recover the bodies due to the proximity of enemy forces, although they did recover important maps, cameras and the weapons. The remains of SSgt Walters were discovered during JTF-FA investigations in early 1999 and positively identified in December. |
