| June would turn out to be a bad month for the O-2 operators with four aircraft lost and seven airmen killed. The first aircraft (call sign Bilk 2) was shot down by small arms fire during a FAC mission 20 miles northwest of Da Nang. The crew were controlling an air strike on enemy buildings and both men died in the crash of their aircraft, a fact verified by an Army helicopter crew who later reached the site. Capt Dickens had flown B-52s with the 34th BS prior to becoming a FAC. |
