A FAC Phantom (call sign Wolf) and its crew were lost during an air strike near Ban Son close to the Ban Karai Pass in southern Laos. Capt Warren was controlling the strike, the target being construction equipment including a bulldozer that had been found on a road 15 miles west of the DMZ. On the third pass the bulldozer was hit by rockets and destroyed but the Phantom hit the ground about 100 yards from its target and exploded. SAR forces encountered 37mm anti-aircraft fire during a two-hour search and it is possible that the aircraft was shot down or failed to pull out of the dive in time. |
