A flight of Skyraiders was on a Barrel Roll armed reconnaissance mission flying along Route 7 in northern Laos. 1Lt Herrick spotted a truck and dived down to attack it. His aircraft (call sign Firefly) flew into the side of a mountain near Ban Paka Noy, close to the border with North Vietnam and some 40 miles east of the Plain of Jars. It was not determined whether he had been shot down or had flown into the ground as a result of target fixation or some other problem. James Herrick was killed the day before his 25th birthday.
