| Capt Lefever and Capt Echanis were leading a dawn strike on a Night Owl FAC mission on roads in the Mu Gia and Ban Karai Passes and were directing a pair of Navy aircraft to a target. Contact was lost with Capt Lefever’s aircraft (call sign Owl) near Ban Senphan, a few miles south of the Mu Gia Pass, and a fireball was seen on the ground. Presuming that the Phantom had been shot down an electronic search was initiated but there was no indication that either of the crew had survived and the wreckage was never located. This Phantom had shot down a MiG-21 on 3 January 1968 when being flown by Maj B J Bogoslofski and Capt R L Huskey of the 433rd TFS. |
