A Bird Dog FAC (call sign Walt) was controlling an air strike near Bu Krak on the South Vietnamese border with Cambodia about 100 miles north of Saigon. The target was an NVA anti-aircraft gun position and Maj Lattin was pulling up from marking the target for the second time when the aircraft was hit by ground fire, which damaged the engine. Maj Lattin crash-landed a few miles from the target and he and his Army observer were safely recovered. |
