A forward air controller, call sign Lopez 11, was checking the roads and trails along the South Vietnamese border with Laos about 20 miles west of Kham Duc when the aircraft was shot down. Neither of the crew escaped from the aircraft before it crashed. Another FAC heard Lt Col Renelt’s radio call saying that the aircraft had been hit but by the time the other FAC reached the scene Renelt’s aircraft was on the ground and burning. The crash site was about two miles northeast of Peta Doc in Laos. Despite a 10-day search there was no sign that the crew had survived the crash. |
