A crew from the 21st TASS were flying a visual reconnaissance mission from their forward operating base at Ban Me Thuot. The Bird Dog (call sign Walt) was about five miles northwest of the airfield when it was hit by small arms fire. With a dead engine and the aircraft on fire, 1Lt Denalt skilfully crash-landed his aircraft resulting in only minor injuries to him and his observer. An Army helicopter rescued them both shortly afterwards. Willis Uhls later became a Raven FAC and was was killed on 11 February 1971. |
