An air strike was called to deal with North Vietnamese troops who were attacking friendly forces about 35 miles south of Pleiku during the night of the 31st. 1Lt Hoenninger and 1Lt Platt were controlling the air strike from their O-2 (call sign Herb) when it was hit by ground fire. The pilot crash-landed the aircraft in the dark and the crew were later rescued by an Army helicopter. |
