Naval gunfire control missions were still being flown to provide artillery support to beleaguered ARVN troops near the coast. A Bronco (call sign Covey 24) was shot near Quang Tri with a Marine Corps observer who specialised in artillery direction. During the mission the aircraft was hit by ground fire and the crew ejected but were quickly captured by NVA troops. The crew was transported across the DMZ and eventually taken to the Hanoi Hilton for imprisonment for the rest of the war. They were both released from captivity on 27 March 1973. Capt Mott had flown more than 100 missions during his tour in Southeast Asia. |
