A naval alpha strike force bombed the thermal power plant at Nam Dinh to the southwest of Haiphong on the 23rd. As the Iron Hand flight was retiring from the target one of the Corsairs (call sign Raven Jet 302) was shot down about 15 miles to the southeast of Nam Dinh. Cdr Barnett was in the trail position at 16,000 feet and had just received a SAM warning when he radioed that his aircraft had been hit by a SAM. No further transmissions were heard but the wingman saw what looked like aircraft wreckage on the ground about five miles from the coast. It was presumed that Cdr Barnett had died in his aircraft. On 3 November 1988 the Vietnamese returned remains that were later identified as being those of Cdr Barnett. Charles Barnett had previously been shot down by a SAM on 13 December 1966 when he was a flying a Skyhawk from the USS Ticonderoga. |
