Once again the escort element tackled the MiGs during a raid on Hanoi and lost one of their number while protecting the strike force. After the attack on a major vehicle repair facility in Hanoi the aircraft headed back to Thailand but about 45 miles southwest of Hanoi the MiGs made a concerted attack. Lt Col Ross’s aircraft was damaged by an air-to-air missile that put the left engine out of action but he managed to make it back into Thailand before he and his WSO had to eject just north of Udorn. Capt Imaye was later credited with a MiG-21 when flying with Lt Col Gene Taft on 29 July. Lt Col Ross had been shot down on 21 May and was rescued from the Gulf of Tonkin. |
