An OV-10 (call sign Nail 60) crashed during a ferry flight when one of its engines failed just as it was crossing the Ho Chi Minh Trail in southern Laos. Both the crew ejected and landed safely. The rescue mission almost failed when two SAR helicopters from Da Nang both had to return to base with technical problems. However, two other helicopters had been scrambled from Nakhon Phanom and a HH-53C from the 37th ARRS completed the rescue although the Bronco observer was badly injured and had to be strapped to a Stokes litter on the ground by a PJ. The wreck of the OV-10 was completely destroyed by the accompanying flight of Sandies to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. |
