Lt Daniel Vernor Borah (KIA) |
A flight of two A-7s was bombing enemy troops and trucks near Dong Ha just south of the DMZ when one of the aircraft was shot down. Lt Borah’s wingman inadvertently dropped all his ordnance on his first pass so he then pulled up to 13,000 feet and watched as Lt Borah began to attack the target. He had just pulled up from his second pass when his aircraft (call sign Saddleback) was seen to burst into flames having been hit by 37mm flak. The aircraft climbed but then rolled inverted and Lt Borah was seen to eject. The pilot made radio contact with his wingman during the parachute descent and was seen to land in trees. Also an emergency beeper was heard to transmit briefly. A two-day SAR effort failed to reveal any further sign of Lt Borah. It seems probable that Daniel Borah was killed either during his parachute descent or on the ground during capture by North Vietnamese troops. Post-war investigation revealed that his aircraft was shot down by the 284th AAA Battalion of the NVA. |
