An Intruder was returning in the dark from a FAC-controlled strike on artillery positions in Military Region 1 when on landing aboard the Midway the starboard main wheel axle snapped off. The aircraft then careered towards the bow where it ran into a Phantom which was so badly damaged that it had to be scrapped. Several other aircraft were damaged in the incident. The Intruder pilot escaped from the burning wreck but Lt Bixel ejected or was ejected when his seat was damaged and he landed in the water. A search by a helicopter and destroyer was unsuccessful. Four of the flight deck crew were also killed when they were hit by debris from the crash. |
