Although the war over North Vietnam was taking the lion’s share of the Navy’s war effort it also participated in operations in the Steel Tiger area of southern Laos. Lt Cdr Lindsey was pulling up from his second bombing run on a bridge about 25 miles west of the DMZ when his aircraft (call sign Egg Shell 104) was hit by ground fire. He climbed to 3,500 feet but the oxygen system failed followed by the radio. Dense smoke filled the rear cockpit forcing Lt Cooper to eject. With the loss of hydraulic power the pilot also ejected although his seat failed to fire at first and only left the aircraft at 1,500 feet. A SAR task force consisting of an HC-54, two A-1Es, a Navy A-1H and two HH-43s arrived at the scene and the two helicopters each picked up a survivor. |
