| During a forward air control mission a Bird Dog was shot down by ground fire 10 miles northwest of its base at Bien Hoa, killing the pilot. Despite heavy ground fire in the area necessitating many suppressive air strikes, a HH-43 from Bien Hoa landed to retrieve Capt Hawley’s body. |
