Capt Brown was flying with an observer of unknown nationality near Ban Pongdong just south of the Mu Gia Pass on a FAC mission when his aircraft was hit by ground fire. He reported that part of his starboard tailplane had been blown off and that he was going to attempt to gain altitude but the aircraft was then seen in a steep dive and rolling out of control. Although it was not known at the time it was later established that both men died in the crash. The crash site was investigated in 1994 and 1995 and Capt Brown’s remains were recovered and buried in Arlington National Cemetery on 19 April 1999, 33 years to the day of his death. |
