An O-1 flew a visual reconnaissance mission in support of the 101st Airborne Division over hilly terrain 30 miles southwest of Qui Nhon. The aircraft (call sign Baron) was hit by ground fire and crashed a few minutes later. Both of the crew were subsequently rescued by a HH-43F from Detachment 11 of the 38th ARRS. Tuy Hoa was the first air base in South Vietnam constructed from scratch under USAF supervision. It was designed to take a fighter-bomber wing, the 31st TFW, which was due to arrive in mid-December. However, the airfield was open for business on 15 November, 45 days ahead of schedule, and a detachment of FAC aircraft from the 21st TASS was among the first occupants. |
