Just after take off from the airstrip at Dau Tieng, 45 miles northeast of Saigon, a Provider (call sign Provide 36) was hit in several places by .50 calibre bullets. Hydraulic lines were ruptured and the fluid caught fire, which panicked many of the Vietnamese paratroopers on board. Some of the paratroopers tried to force the emergency door open to jump out while others forced their way into the cockpit and tried to climb out of the side window. Capt Nagel turned back to the airfield and managed to make a skillful belly landing. He dived the aircraft sharply before touch down so that all the paratroopers were thrown to the floor before the aircraft impacted the ground. All the paratroopers and the crew escaped with only minor injuries. |
