1Lt George Bruce Menges (KIA)

The loss of a FAC in southern Laos heralded the start of another year of war. Using the radio call sign Nail, which would become a familiar FAC call sign of the 23rd TASS, 1Lt Menges was shot down by automatic weapons fire near Ban Sappeng and apparently did not survive, although whether he was killed in the crash or on the ground is not known.

On this day the 8th TFW mounted a brilliantly planned and executed fighter sweep near Hanoi, known as Operation Bolo in which seven MiGs were destroyed without loss to the USAF.
