As usual during a Rolling Thunder strike, an EB-66 was orbiting over North Vietnam to identify and jam enemy radars and provide warning of electronic threats to the F-105 strike force. As Capt Fer’s aircraft, call sign Harpoon 1, was flying at 30,000 feet near Bac Kan, 30 miles north of Thai Nguyen, it was hit in the belly by an SA-2 missile. At least three of the crew ejected from the blazing wreck and were captured but three electronic warfare officers were killed. In 1977 the Vietnamese returned remains that were identified on 30 September as being those of Capt Doby. On 3 January 1990 it was announced that the remains of Maj Wilburn had been handed over and identified, leaving only Capt Poor unaccounted for. 1Lt Davies was released from imprisonment on 18 February while Capt Fer and Maj Bomar were released on 4 March 1973. |
