The First Bombing Halt (Dec 1965)
President Johnson announced a cessation of the bombing campaign in North Vietnam from Christmas Eve. This was done in the hope that the damage that the US assumed it was inflicting on the North would encourage Ho Chi Minh to start peace negotiations. The first bombing halt lasted for just over a month, but with little sign of any reciprocal gesture from the North Vietnamese the Rolling Thunder campaign was resumed on 31 January 1966.
