Notes on Codes

The first confirmed sighting of squadron code letters used on USAF aircraft in Southeast Asia was in Jan 1967 although code letters may have been used before the end of 1966. Some of the first squadron codes were worn by the F-4 squadrons of the 366^th TFW at Da Nang and were unique in that each aircraft carried individual code letters in the series AA to AZ (389^th TFS), BA to BZ (390^th TFS) and CA to CZ (480^th TFS). However, this system was soon discarded in favour of code letters for the each squadron. Most tactical aircraft carried squadron codes by the end of 1967. The exceptions were helicopters; the H-3, H-43 and H-53 and FAC aircraft; the O-1, O-2 and OV-10. Individual squadron codes were replaced towards the end of the war by code letters that merely identified the wing, often mnemonically, such as the letters UD for Udorn.
